Three hours inside Etna's eruptive history

The Intermediate Tour is our Etna quad excursion for those who want one more hour of adventure and rougher ground: technical dirt trails, climbs on volcanic surface and the great lava fields of the east side. It's the favourite of anyone who has already ridden a quad — or who, after the briefing, feels ready to pick up the pace.

From Milo we climb north through the woods of the Etna Park up to the Ripe della Naca, the steep escarpments that dominate the valley between Fornazzo and Sant'Alfio. Here the forest suddenly opens onto the cones of the 1928 craters: the eruptive vents of the eruption that in just over two days reached and destroyed the town of Mascali. It's one of the most history-laden places on the whole volcano, and you can only get there on dirt trails.

At the panoramic stop the guide tells the story of the 1928 eruption, how to read the overlapping flows and why the east side is the greenest and steepest of Etna. On clear days the view runs from the Ionian Sea all the way to Calabria. The way back runs over a sequence of fast trails between broom and lava: the most fun part for riders.

In total it's about 3 hours door to door, with an elevation gain and a variety of terrain the Basic Tour doesn't reach. If it's your very first time on a quad, we suggest starting with the 2-hour Basic Tour; if you want the full experience, there's the 4.5-hour Advanced Tour.

Intermediate Tour FAQ

What are the 1928 craters?

The eruptive vents of the November 1928 eruption, the only one of the 20th century to destroy an entire town (Mascali). Today they form an amphitheatre of cones and flows above the Ripe della Naca, reachable only on dirt trails — half an hour of scenic riding by quad.

What riding experience do I need?

A little confidence: if you've ridden a quad or scooter before, or simply feel ready after the briefing, you're in the right place. The guide always leads the group and sets the pace on the slowest rider.

How much is it and how do I pay?

€120 per quad (€150 in summer), up to 2 people per vehicle. No deposit: you book via the form or WhatsApp and pay on the day. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

Can I bring my child?

Yes, as a passenger from 10 years old. The ground here is rougher than the Basic Tour, which is why the minimum passenger age is higher.
